Client lists, the honest answer
Can I sell my client list? Not on its own; with the business, yes
Not on its own for someone else's marketing: in the UK that needs consent naming the buyer, which few lists have. A list that goes with the whole business is a different deal, a sale of the firm, and the deal history behind it, stripped of names, is what AI buyers pay for.
Ask about my CRM data Which CRM, how many years of deals and activity, and whether the company is trading, closing or being sold. We read it against the vendor terms and contact-data law here and reply in writing.
Why a list sold on its own fails
The ICO's guide to PECR puts it in one line: as a general rule, a firm can only sell its marketing list with the consent of the people on it, and that consent has to name or describe the companies the details go to. PECR regulation 22 forbids sending marketing email to individuals unless they have consented, and the ICO's guidance says marketing emails or texts must not go to individuals without specific consent. The limited exception it describes, the soft opt-in, covers a firm's own previous customers.

The ICO's data sharing code treats the transfer of a database or list of individuals as data sharing, whether for money or not, and makes the receiver responsible for the data it gets: checking its source, the lawful basis it was collected on and what the people were told.

How do I sell my customer list with the business?
When a firm changes hands, the ICO's code asks the buyer to treat the data as part of its due diligence: establish why the data was originally obtained, the lawful basis for passing it on, and when and how clients will be told what is happening. Under UK GDPR, the people in the data are kept informed of certain changes to how it is used, and may have a right to object.

The buyers of whole firms say so on their own sites, and none we read publishes a price. Xeinadin announced on 20 April 2026 that it had bought three North London accountancy practices, each keeping its office and leadership. Jensten tells brokers considering a sale that it acquires businesses sharing its values, and announced three acquisitions on 7 January 2026. Perspective Financial Group completed six more acquisitions in April 2026 and calls itself a home for retiring advisers looking for a local partner for their clients.

Sell my customer database to AI instead?
Not the contact table, but the history around it: what each customer needed, the follow-ups and why they bought. BizBuyData by Mode says a company's data could be worth $100K–$5M and that it transforms personal identifiers in the agreed copy (read 27 October 2026). Maryah publishes a range of $800K to $1M and licenses sales records with identifying details removed (read 8 October 2026).

What a client list must lose first
- Every name, email and phone number, unless the deal is a sale of the firm itself.
- Contacts who opted out of marketing, which the ICO says they may do at any time.
- Notes about individuals that a client would not expect to leave the firm.
A note for your partners
"We can't sell the client list on its own, but the firm with its book is saleable, and our deal history may license to AI buyers once the names come out. Worth a call to see which fits?"
